First 80 Families Completed the DLBA’s Buy Back Program

More than 80 families in Detroit received the deed to their foreclosed homes Tuesday.

Detroit’s high property tax burden serves as a major obstacle towards residents’ upward economic mobility, however, there are interventions to address the city’s high tax rates.

An heirs’ property is a family-owned property inherited through generations or passed on to recipients without formal legal proceedings to prove ownership.

More than 80 families in Detroit are buying back their homes that had been lost to foreclosure.

The first class to graduate from what’s called the Detroit Land Bank’s Buy Back Program received the deeds to their homes Tuesday.

Detroiter Anthony Lewis has lived in his home near Wyoming and Schoolcraft for 10 years. He says it’s a great feeling to be rewarded for staying in his home and in the city.

“You know, I’ve been in Detroit all my life and I was getting ready to leave,” Lewis says. “And then I was given this program. It’s not that people are trying to leave Detroit, it’s that the people that are staying feel like they are being left out of the progress that’s happening in Detroit. So, it would be nice if, you know, they give us something.”

Officials say another roughly 90 families will complete the program and receive their deeds in August.

About 600 more families are currently seeking to join the program.
