Recent reports found that U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) of Detroit, the ranking member on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, could face an effort to force him out of his leadership position..

The Judiciary Committee plays a crucial role in many policy matters, including being the venue where any potential impeachment proceedings against a president would flow through.

Both the second-ranking Democrat on the committee, U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and the third-ranking member, U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) have reportedly shown interest in leading Judiciary.

But Lofgren says she told Nadler that she is content with leaving the reins in the hands of Conyers.

“I wrote him a note indicating that I support Mr. Conyers’ position. I always have,” Lofgren says. “Should a vacancy occur I would be interested. But if Mr. Conyers is still a member of the House of Representatives in the next Congress, and if we take the majority, I fully expect that he would be the chairman.”

The Judiciary Committee would likely be the launching pad for any effort to impeach President Trump, and it includes several veteran lawmakers familiar with that process.

Most experts say impeachment remains a remote possibility, despite the President recently acknowledging that he is, in fact, under investigation for alleged obstruction of justice.

Lofgren agrees any talk of impeachment is very premature.

But she tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter that she and others on the Judiciary Committee stand ready if the political or investigative winds blow that way.
