Belle Isle Aquarium Adds Man Eater to Collection

Amazon Red Bellied Piranha joins 200 other species at historic facility

The Belle Isle Aquarium is moving up on the list of most popular attractions in Southeast Michigan. Officials say this year’s attendance should bump the 112-year old facility up to the fourth most visited attraction in the region. But the historic building hasn’t always been accessible. Detroit officials shut down the tanks in 2005. It remained empty until 2012 when it reopened under the management of the Belle Isle Conservancy. Aquarium General Manager Fred Huebener tells WDET’s Amy Miller volunteers and fundraisers have helped open about 70% of the tanks.
