Royal Oak City Commissioners are considering a new automatic trash collection system.

The system would allow residents to place all of their trash and recyclables in one dumpster at the curb instead of using individual bins.

Greg Rassel is Royal Oak’s Director of Public Service. He says the city should continue to use its current trash collection system.

“It would require a real change in how we do things here in Royal Oak,” Rassel says. “We would have to look at parking on the street on trash day. The number of trees that we have in the neighborhood as far as placement of the cans could impact the level of service we could provide to the residents.”

Rassel says using an automatic trash service would also increase the city’s annual costs.

Royal Oak residents may also see a proposal to renew a trash collection millage on the August 2nd ballot.
