Detroit Education Commission set to anchor Detroit School Reform

John Rakolta, of the Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren, discusses the DEC and Detroit school reform

Michigan lawmakers are set to consider reform legislation for Detroit Public Schools when they return from Spring recess this month.

One idea being put forward would create a body to oversee the opening and closing all public schools in the city — DPS and charter. The Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren proposed the creation of the Detroit Education Commission in its 2015 report outlining a plan for fixing Detroit schools.

But John Rakolta, co-chair of coalition,  says the idea of the DEC is being distorted.
