Detroit Public Schools Gets Emergency Money, Oversight

Legislature approves $50 million dollars for DPS

The Detroit Public Schools will get the money it needs to finish the school year.

State lawmakers have approved the nearly $50 million the district needs to pay its staff through June.

The bill traveled from the Senate to the House then back to the Senate within a few hours. At issue was a provision that put the Financial Review Commission in charge of DPS finances. The FRC has supervised Detroit finances since the city’s bankruptcy.

The final version of the legislation gives the FRC oversight over district finances when there is no emergency manager in place.

The bill now goes to Governor Snyder for approval.

Lawmakers are also considering bills to determine the long-term governance of Detroit Public Schools and resolve the district’s $515 million debt.
