The Pope Talks to Congress

The Pope makes a historic speech to Congress.

Stephen Henderson talks with Andy Hoffman, education director at the Graham Sustainability Institute at the University of Michigan, and Niraj Warikoo, religion reporter to the Detroit Free Press, about The Pope’s remarks to Congress.

Congress: The Pope has spoken out against capitalism and various other issues in American culture, but his remarks to Congress were not overly paternal. “He, I think wisely, did not take a scolding tone,” Hoffman says.

Remarks: Some conservatives have made remarks that dismissed His Holiness’ interpretations of Catholic doctrine, which make some on the right uncomfortable. “Sometimes to be biblically consistent, you have to be politically inconsistent.” Hoffman says.
