Ferndale Superintendent Blake Prewitt Talks on the Future of Ferndale Schools

Ferndale schools superintendent speaks on district triumphs and struggles.

In the finale for WDET’s Superintendent Series, Stephen Henderson talks with the Superintendent of Ferndale Schools, Blake Prewitt, about the district.

Diversity: “We’ve had the ability to be diverse for a long time,” Prewitt says. Students are exposed to culture the first day of school, he says.

Population Loss: While Ferndale was up in enrollment on the last count day, population loss is still a major factor for the suburb. Last year Michigan lost 85,000 to other states. “It’s not a Ferndale problem, it’s a Michigan problem,” Prewitt says.

Common Core: According to Prewitt, it’s a bigger issue than it needs to be. The curriculum is so big that not everything can be covered. So from, that teacher’s pick the most important basics for students to master and have everything fall into place from there. “It’s more than a political issue than a teacher issue,” Prewitt says.
