Effects of Detroit Newspaper Strike Still Being Felt 20 Years Later

WDET reporters say the strike forever changed how Metro Detroiters got their news.

On July 13, 1995, nearly 2,500 Detroit newspaper employees walked off their jobs to protest what they called management’s unfair labor practices. During the 19-month strike, circulation of both the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press dropped, but the papers stayed in business. WDET’s Sandra Svoboda and Quinn Klinefelter covered the strike. They tell WDET’s Pat Batcheller that the walkout had origins years before it started and had effects that are still being felt today.
