US Attorney In Detroit To Lead Criminal Investigation Into Takata Air Bags

The U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit will lead a criminal investigation into potentially-dangerous Takata air bags.

The U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit will lead a criminal investigation into defective air bags produced by the company Takata.

The manufacturer agreed to a consent order this week which will have the company recall almost 34 million vehicles equipped with its air bags.

About 100 injuries and a half-dozen fatalities are tied to the air bags, which can explode when they deploy and shower passengers with shrapnel.

The U.S. Justice Department has also opened a criminal investigation into Takata’s handling of previous recalls involving the air bags.

Some members of Congress have pressed for such an investigation.

Now federal officials confirm that the probe into Takata’s actions will be led by the U.S. Attorney in Detroit.

Takata’s North American headquarters is in Auburn Hills.
