The Greening Of Detroit Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The Greening of Detroit celebrates 25 years of planting trees and education.

A Detroit grassroots organization is celebrating 25 years of planting everything from trees to peas in the city. “The Greening of Detroit” is holding a series of events showcasing what officials call an ongoing effort to support a healthy urban community. President Rebecca Salminen Witt says the organization provides environmental and nutritional education to Detroit youth.

“Most recently our programing has turned to focus on getting folks jobs in the green industries. What we do is something that you can hired in. The green industries are one of the bright points in Detroit’s and the job market across the country.”

Rebecca Salminen Witt, President of The Greening of Detroit

Salminen Witt says the group has planted 85 thousand trees across the city. She says this Saturday the organization will revisit and restore the first trees it planted 25 years ago.
