Washtenaw County is Cracking Down On Distracting Drivers

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on distracted drivers.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on motorists who are texting and driving. Additional deputies are on the roads watching frequent crash sites in Ypsilanti Township.

Derrick Jackson, from the Washtenaw County Sherriff’s Office, says it’s very easy to spot a distracted driver.

“Think about yourself driving down the road,” Jackson says. “Or you stop at a stoplight or stop sign and pay attention for a minute you can just watch your fellow drivers and you’d be surprised at how many people you can see clearly on their phone distracted, looking down, making phone calls, texting. It’s actually pretty scary seeing how many people take that risk.”

Jackson says the crackdown is a good opportunity to educate the community about the dangers of distracted driving. The fine for a person caught driving and texting is 100 dollars for the first offense and 200 dollars for the second offense.
