Wrapped in Plastic by The HandGrenades (live @ WDET)

The HandGrenades are one of the best straight-up rock bands in Detroit. They croon, they crunch, they work a room with riffs and rhythm. You can catch ‘em live at the Loving Touch in Ferndale on Saturday, March 28th. First listen to this track ‘ Wrapped in Plastic’ from their last record, titled 52,  recorded during the summer of ‘14 live at 101.9 WDET. And listen/read more about them here.

Ghostly International recording artist (THE stamp of approval at Culture City) and celebrated graphic designer under the moniker ISO/50, Tycho is the shimmering electronic-rock outfit created by the ever-creative Scott Hansen. The band brings heavy visuals and sweeping melodies to the Royal Oak Music Theater, the biggest room this band has ever played in the area.

Gabriel Hall Artist Showcase w/ One Freq & More!  @ UFO Factory | Saturday, March 28th @ 9 PM Detroit

The UFO Factory will be overrun with soulful food and music from Detroit’s favorite New Orleans-inspired musical and culinary outfit, Gabriel Hall. rising indie-soul outfit OneFreq is on the bill, plus The Normandies pop by, and DJ Carleton Gholz drops hot wax all over the damn place.

Radio Campfire: Warmth @ Matrix Theatre Friday, March 27th @ 7 PM Detroit

WDET alumnus Zak Rosen and Laura Herberg  are bringing story lovers and podcast fans together  for an evening of creative audio listening. Radio Campfire is a new series of listening events devoted to radio documentaries, soundscapes and experimental sonic shorts of note. They swear its as relaxed as it is magical. The theme this go-round is “Warmth.” Free good times.

Natives & Pioneers: A Panel Discussion Exploring Art & Gentrification @ Carr Center | Friday, March 17th @ 7:30 PM

As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Carr Center, the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design hosts a panel discussion exploring the topic of art and gentrification. This panel discussion is in conjunction with an online series on this topic created through a partnership between the Stamps School and the arts and culture journal ∞ mile (Infinite Mile). Does art inherently support gentrification? Does art have a role in countering gentrification? The panel is moderated by Francis Grunow. Panelists include Rick Lowe, Founder and Director of Project Row Houses in  Houston, Michael Forsyth from Revolve Detroit, developer Richard Hosey, the director of the Trinosophes venue and former Metro Times arts editor, Rebecca Mazzei, as well as Marsha Music, writer & 2012 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Free and open to the public.

Belterra @ New Way Bar | Friday, March 27th @ 8 PM Ferndale

Electronic music takes over the New Way Bar?!? Alright, we’re there.  Bellyache records recording artist Belterra is joined by two new electronic projects from Detroit music veterans. Come see the sights and hear the sounds. Belterra is the stagename of one Kelsey Nuernberg, a solo artist who performs vocal/synth (and some guitar) based dark electro pop music that is heavily influenced by the synthesizer sounds of the 1980’s.

The North American Bicycle Show @ COBO Hall | Saturday March 28th @ 10 AM Detroit

It’s baaaacckkk! Detroit’s premier consumer bicycle event features everything that is bicycles under one roof. Come check out new stuff for 2015, catch a deal on last years bicycle. If you’ve yet to visit, you should really get over to The Zenith, one of Detroit’s newest and most interesting eateries, culinarily and otherwise. They really do a killer brunch, especially if you love flavors from the southwest. This Sunday, Johnny Ukulele provides the soundtrack to your bloodies and bennies from noon to 3 PM.
