State Senator Hopgood Backs Child Protection Act

November 14, 2012

The Michigan Senate is considering legislation to close a loophole in the state’s sex offender laws. Democratic Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood of Taylor has introduced the “Children’s Protection Act”, which would protect the children of convicted child predators. Amy Carns is mother of a five year old girl and a driving force behind the new law.

“Currently there’s no statutes in place here in Michigan that protect children that have parents who are convicted sex offenders. There’s nothing that protects them from being placed back into those parents’ arms without proper provisions in place.”

Carns found the legislative gap when her daughter was in danger of being placed into the custody of her ex-husband, a convicted child sex offender. She says the law is needed to protect her daughter and other children in similar situations.
