The leader of Canada’s official opposition in the federal government is dead. New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton died in Toronto early Monday morning.
Layton suffered from an undisclosed type of cancer. His death comes just a month after he announced that he was taking some time off to fight the disease. He had originally hoped to be back at work by mid-September. Layton was treated for prostate cancer in 2009.
