The Washington D.C. based Center for Education Reform has ranked Michigan among the top five most welcoming states for charter schools. The report says 297 charter schools currently operate in the state. Dan Varner is a member of the State Board of Education and the CEO for Excellent Schools Detroit. He says more than 600 institutions can issue charters in Michigan, leading to a surplus of schools with inconsistent education standards.

“We probably have 25 thousand more seats than kids in a system that needs to serve 110, 120 thousand school age children in Detroit. That much extra capacity that we’re all paying for is remarkably inefficient and results in a worse quality education for all kids everywhere.”

Varner says he hopes Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will address the issue of education with the state legislature. He says charter school regulations are among the measures that could help the city’s education system.
