Police Cuts in Michigan: Is Public At Risk?

Michigan has fewer police officers on duty now than it did in 2001. The Michigan Association of Police says local governments have been forced to cut their police departments because of falling tax revenue. And many are turning to other agencies to protect their residents rather than raising taxes. Fred Timpner is the executive director of the Association, a labor organization which represents about 1,000 police officers and sheriff deputies in southeast Michigan. WDET’s Pat Batcheller asked Timpner, a former policeman, whether politicians--and taxpayers--still view public safety as a vital service. Click the audio link above to hear the conversation.
