Lake Erie: Harmful Algae Blooms Ahead?

Lake Erie is suffering from too much of a good thing. Heavy spring precipitation and agricultural runoff have given the lake an excessive amount of phosphorus, and too much of the nutrient could result in harmful algae blooms this summer. WDET's Annamarie Sysling speaks with Director of the Sea Grant College Program at Ohio State University Dr. Jeffrey Reutter about the issues surrounding algae blooms. Reutter says implementing new agricultural practices to decrease phosphorous runoff could be part of the solution to this problem. Lake Erie is the warmest, most shallow and most southern of the five Great Lakes.
