Eleanor Josaitis dies at 79.

Eleanor Josaitis, who co-founded Focus:HOPE in Detroit in the aftermath of the 1967 riot, has died at the age of 79. She had been suffering from cancer complications and was moved to Angela Hospice in Livonia last week. Josaitis started Focus;HOPE with Rev. William Cunningham to help residents escape the cycle of poverty. Since then, the agency has provided thousands of people with food, job training, and other services. For years, the non-profit's food pantry and job training center have been stops on the Detroit Orientation Institute's tour of the city. Anne Slawnik recently retired as the director of the DOI, and worked at Focus:HOPE for most of the 1990s. She shared her memories of Eleanor Josaitis with WDET's Pat Batcheller.
