A member of the state legislature has joined the race for mayor of Detroit.
State representative Fred Durhal, Junior announced his mayoral bid during a news conference on Detroit’s west side Monday. Durhal says he worked as an aide to Mayor Coleman Young and plans to follow in his footsteps.
“I’m going to be the same kind of mayor… I’m going to demand excellence from the department heads. And they’re going to demand excellence from the mid managers and the workers. And when you contact folks from the city of Detroit they’re going to do business with a smile and do it pleasantly.”
Durhal says he wants to be mayor because he grew up in Detroit and believes city government could be better than it is. He says his financial and political experience in the State House gives him the skills to help the city.
