Detroiters Pass City Charter Proposal

Detroiters have voted to pass a new city charter. WDET’s Jerome Vaughn has more. SOQ

The new city charter will mean several changes in Detroit government. Most city council members will be elected by district, beginning in 2013.

City council candidates will have to show that they’ve lived in the district for at least a year prior to the election.

The new charter also calls for the creation of a department to investigate corruption and waste…and the institution of stricter rules on ethics.

The Charter Commissions has been working on the proposed changes for much of the past two years.
