Analysts say pent-up demand for new vehicles, spurred the jump in sales…even though consumer confidence fell in May.
Chrysler had its best May since 2007. Sales jumped 30% - pushed by consumer interest in the Chrysler 300 and 200 sedans.
Ford sales rose 13%. The automaker says demand for its pickup trucks grew last month, reflecting an upswing in housing construction.
GM sales rose 11%.
Toyota reported the best year-over-year improvement among automakers…with sales jumping 87%. Last year at this time, the company was dealing with severe shortages caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
