Canada Moves Ahead w/ New Bridge Plans

Canadian officials say they're going ahead with plans to build a new bridge between Windsor and Detroit, now that Michigan voters have rejected Proposal 6. The proposal would have required a public vote before the state could spend tax dollars on the construction of any new border crossing. It was paid for mostly by the owner of the Ambassador Bridge, who spent more than $30,000,000 to promote Proposal 6. Critics called it an attempt to protect the bridge company's monopoly and to buy a piece of the Michigan Constitution. Roy Norton is Canada's Consul General for Michigan. He tells WDET's Pat Batcheller the next step in the project is to secure the approval of President Barack Obama. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
