Ten Detroit men have won grants for projects that improve the lives of African-American males. The BME leadership award winners were announced this morning. BME stands for Black Male Engagement. The winners will each receive grants of up to $50,000 for their community-improvement efforts. One of the winners is Curtis Lipscomb. After coming out as a gay man with HIV, Lipscomb began helping young people fight discrimination. He’s getting a $20,000 dollar grant to help 22 young Detroiters address social issues facing the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
