Bing To Layoff 1,000 City Workers

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has ordered the layoffs of one-thousand city workers to help ease a fiscal crisis. As WDET’s Jerome Vaughn reports… nine percent of the city’s 11-thousand municipal workers will be affected. SOQ

Mayor Bing says without drastic action…Detroit will run out of cash in a few months…and could face a shortfall of 45 million dollars by the summer.

The city says the layoffs will save Detroit about 14 million dollars by the end of the fiscal year. .

Layoff notices will go out in January. The positions will be eliminated by late February.

Bing has also ordered a hiring freeze for all civil service workers…except for the city water department…which is covered by a court order.

Meanwhile, the mayor continues to negotiate for concessions from municipal workers’ unions.
