The American Civil Liberties Union is suing Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson for denying driving licenses and identification cards for undocumented immigrants living in the state. The suit was filed on behalf of three people who qualify for licenses or ID cards under the U.S. government's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The program covers people who were brought to the country illegally as children. To get a card, they have to be younger than 31 years old, prove they've lived here at least five years, and undergo a background check. Johnson says the DACA does not give undocumented immigrants legal status, and therefore she can't issue licenses or ID cards to applicants. WDET's Pat Batcheller talked about the dispute with Miriam Aukerman of the ACLU of Michigan. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
