Members of the Wayne State chapter of the American Association of University Professors – American Federation of Teachers allege that university officials are trying to do away with tenure for professors. The allegations come as faculty members are bargaining for a new labor contract with the university. The union says a new review process being proposed by the university would apply to all faculty members, including tenured professors, and could be used to terminate any of them. But Wayne State Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Personnel – Margaret Winters – says the university is simply trying to evaluate faculty performance more efficiently. She said, “Our intent is not to take away tenure but to bring accountability to the process. And we don’t think the two are mutually exclusive.” Officials with the national American Federation of Teachers counter that the proposal is still tantamount to abolishing tenure and would make Wayne State among the first -- if not the first -- research university to enact such a move.
