Testimony Likely To Begin in Michigan Militia Trial

February 13, 2012

Opening statements could begin this week in the case of a Michigan militia accused of plotting to overthrow the government. Federal prosecutors say members of a group calling itself the Hutaree planned to kill police in hopes of inciting a general uprising against the government. Federal agents arrested nine members of the group. One has already pleaded guilty. Another was declared incompetent to stand trial. Attorneys for the remaining defendants say the group was simply exercising their right to free speech, and just talking about things they never planned to do. During jury selection last week both the prosecution and defense paid particular attention to prospective jurors views about government informants. An undercover agent reported comments made by the Hutaree to federal officials, which led to the arrests.
