The U.S. Supreme Court ruled this week that the Constitution forbids a mandatory life sentence in prison without parole for juveniles convicted of murder. The High Court found the sentence would be a cruel and unusual punishment. WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter talked about the decision with an attorney who has been fighting the use of such punishment – Deborah La Belle. She’s the Director of the Juvenile Life Without Parole Initiative for the American Civil Liberties Union and the lead attorney in a federal case challenging the Michigan law that mandated life sentences for some young offenders.
