Newsrooms around the Metro Detroit area are being flooded by callers saying they felt the effects of an earthquake centered in the Washington, D.C. area. The five-point-nine magnitude earthquake with an epicenter north of Richmond, Virginia was reportedly felt from Washington, D.C. to New York City and Georgia. There have been several anecdotal reports that it was also felt in Michigan, Ontario and Ohio. Residents in Corktown told Detroit media outlets they felt the quake as well as people living in the city’s Midtown area. Employees at the Ministry of Environment in Windsor also report feeling a tremor. But the Detroit Police Department and other emergency responders in the city say they did not feel any effects from the quake and have no reports of damage. Officials at the National Weather Service and the U-S Geological Survey say they have received calls from people saying they felt tremors as well. One building in Windsor was evacuated, but city officials say that was because someone triggered a fire alarm.
