Simulated Emergency Set For Detroit River

This week officials from Detroit and the U.S. Coast Guard join with Canadian authorities for a joint exercise to prepare for emergencies on the Detroit River. First there’s an explosion on the Detroit Princess riverboat. Passengers are evacuated. Then a huge oil spill develops along the Detroit River. Simulated catastrophic events that are well within the realms of possibility and would require wide-ranging coordinated efforts from emergency responders. About 60 U.S. and Canadian agencies from all levels of government will test contingency plans for handling such emergencies in the Detroit River corridor stretching from Trenton to Detroit and Windsor. Officials organizing the exercise are also requesting that residents in Detroit and Windsor ensure there is an actual emergency before making 911 calls…since the event on the river will involve an actual, controlled explosion and a fair amount of smoke.
