Romney Runs Into Anger Over Auto Bailout Opposition

Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is making his first campaign swing though his native state of Michigan since announcing his candidacy. But Romney is running into criticism from auto workers angry that he opposed federal bailouts for the industry… Romney defeated John McCain in Michigan’s 2008 presidential primary… But later that year Romney wrote an op-ed in the New York Times arguing that the auto industry much of Michigan relies on should be allowed to go bankrupt. With Romney counting heavily on the state for his 2012 bid…about 80 union workers and state Democrats protested his campaign stop at a Metro Detroit restaurant. Romney says he always supported the auto industry…just not the federal financial bailout given to it. “I wouldn’t have just written checks like the Bush and the Obama Administration did right off the bat. I wouldn’t have written them checks. I would’ve said go through bankruptcy directly on your own. And don’t give the company to the UAW when you’re finished. Those are things I would’ve done differently,” Romney said. With recent data showing the pace of the economic recovery slowing…President Obama has often touted the turnaround in the US auto industry as an economic success story for his Administration.
