A federal trial is underway in Detroit for members of a Michigan militia accused of plotting domestic terrorism. But defense attorneys allege the militia members were merely exercising their right to free speech… Prosecutors used their opening statement to paint the group calling itself the Hutaree as a para-military organization bent on killing police officers in hopes of inciting a general uprising against the government – even e-mailing diagrams of how to build a bomb. Defense attorneys argue the group was preparing itself for the coming of the Biblical armaggedon – not planning to overthrow the government – just – quote – “exercising their God-given right to blow off steam.” Federal agents say informants told them an attack by the Hutaree was imminent. Defense counsel counter that no actual target was ever identified.
