Opening arguments are set to begin this week in the trial of a man accused of trying to set-off explosive on-board a Detroit-bound airliner two years ago. Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is representing himself in the terror trial, with the help of a court-appointed attorney. That advisor, defense attorney Anthony Chambers, will present the opening arguments on behalf of his client – who’s already suffered some legal setbacks. The court will allow jurors to hear a confession Abdulmutallab allegedly gave without being made aware of his right to remain silent, a so-called “martyrdom” video he created and a model of the device he’s accused of trying to blow-up the airplane with. Last week Chambers blasted the make-up of the jury itself, arguing that it should be more racially diverse. There are only three African Americans among the 16 jurors and alternates on the panel.
