Several Catholic institutions are joining in a suit against the Obama Administration…over a mandate that most employers offer insurance that covers birth control. The groups charge the mandate violates religious freedom. About a dozen suits are being filed by institutions including the Archdiocese of Michigan…the Archdiocese of Washington and the University of Notre dame. The groups argue a requirement in health care law that insurance plans cover birth control for women without a co-pay violates a basic belief of Catholicism…and would affect many hospitals…schools and charities affiliated with the faith. President Obama has offered to ease the mandate…but the U-S Conference of Catholic Bishops counters that Administration proposals do not go far enough…and congressional action is needed.
