Jury selection begins today in Detroit for members of a Michigan militia accused of plotting to overthrow the government. It’s the second terror trial in Detroit in recent months. Federal officials allege nine members of a group calling itself the Hutaree planned to kill police officers in hopes of inciting a general uprising. Defense attorneys counter that the Hutaree never identified any target and were just talking – exercising their right to free speech. One member has already reached a plea deal. Another has been declared incompetent to stand trial. The federal court is taking extra security precautions for this, the second recent terror trial in Detroit, following the conviction of an al Qaeda operative who attempted to blow up a plane with a bomb hidden in his underwear.
