Hutaree Member Expected To Plead Guilty

A member of a Michigan militia charged with plotting to overthrow the government will likely plead guilty this week. More than a year ago federal officials charged nine members of a group calling itself the Hutaree with seditious conspiracy and attempting to use weapons of mass destruction. Prosecutors allege the group planned to kill law enforcement personnel in hopes of inciting a general uprising against the government. Now court records reveal one of the group’s members – Joshua Clough – plans to change his not guilty plea to guilty. The reason why remains unclear. Defense attorneys have argued that members of the group were simply talking, not taking action, and are protected by their right to free speech. One of the defendants – Jacob Ward – has been declared incompetent to stand trial and ordered to receive treatment. The case is scheduled to go to trial in February.
