Feds Worry About Attack To Avenge Bin Laden

April 30, 2012

Federal officials say members of al Qaeda could try to stage an attack this week on the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden. Intelligence officials say publicly that they have found no specific threats of an imminent attack by al Qaeda. But officials are concerned about the resurgence of an offshoot of the group…based in Yemen. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has been considered a significant threat since it backed the efforts of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow-up an airplane bound for Detroit on Christmas Day 2009. An intelligence bulletin circulated last week noted that officials believe the group plans to again target aircraft in the U.S. White House officials have also said the group may try to avenge bin Laden, though not necessarily on the anniversary of his death.
