The federal government is suing the state of Michigan for not delivering absentee ballots to some members of the U.S. military. Michigan may be ordered to count ballots received after the state’s primary elections next week… Under state and federal law…clerks in Michigan must make absentee ballots available to voters in the military and others outside the country 45 days before an election. But Michigan’s Secretary of State says at least 70 cities and townships missed that deadline for next week’s primaries. Now the Justice Department wants a federal judge to mandate that Michigan count all absentee ballots cast in the primary – even if they arrive after election day. The extra votes could make a difference in several close contests…where recent redistricting pits sitting Democratic Congress members against each other.
