Detroit Council Refuses To Cut Budget By A Third

The Detroit City Council has rejected a proposal to cut its budget. Council voted six -to-two against trimming its budget by a third. Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown had proposed the idea as a way to help ease the city’s dire fiscal crisis. But the majority of Brown’s colleagues rejected the idea, with several arguing that the move would be excessive and diminish the power of the legislative branch of city government. Council Member Ken Cockrell Junior says enacting the cut would be akin to engaging in “a race to the bottom.” Council has already cut its budget by 10 % in each of the past 3 years. Even with that Council’s overall $13 million budget is one of the largest in the country.
