The man who tried to blow up a plane bound for Detroit two years ago with an explosive hidden in his underwear pleaded guilty to all charges Tuesday.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab faces a sentence of life in prison.
Abdulmutallab says he boarded a plane headed for Detroit with the intention of killing as many American as possible on behalf of al Qaeda – calling it retaliation for the U.S. supporting Israel and, in his words, killing innocent Muslim women and children.
His court-appointed advisor -- attorney Anthony Chambers -- says Abdulmutallab’s wish to go on record with his statement trumped the liklihood that he will spend the rest of his life in a jail cell.
Chambers said, “I believe that his statement allowed him to say something that he perhaps has wanted to say for some period of time. And so to that degree he may have gotten some satisfaction.”
Abdulmutallab will be sentenced in January.
