This week attorneys for Manuel “Matty” Moroun are scheduled to argue against their client facing contempt of court charges before the Michigan Court of Appeals. Moroun and the president of the Detroit International Bridge Company – Dan Stamper – were jailed briefly after a judge ruled they were in contempt for failing to meet a deadline to finish a construction project. The company was ordered in 2010 to complete the Gateway Project, which features ramps and roads connecting the Ambassador Bridge with nearby expressways. Moroun had argued that he was only a minority owner of the Bridge and should not legally face contempt charges. State officials countered that Moroun has long been known to be in charge of the Bridge company. Moroun’s son claims the Wayne County judge in the case has a “vendetta” against their family.
