Chrysler Workers To Complete Voting On New Contract

Voting on a new contract between the United Auto Workers union and Chrysler is scheduled to be completed this week. UAW leaders admit the union contract with Chrysler is not the best of the new deals negotiated with Detroit’s Big 3. But they note that Chysler is in the worst financial position of any of the automakers as well. The roughly 26,000 union rank-and-file at Chrysler have expressed some of the same concerns as workers at Ford and General Motors. They lament that the new union deals do not allow annual pay raises for most workers, instead substituting profit sharing and signing bonuses. If Chrysler workers ratify the contract, the deal provides for automakers to create a combined 13,000 new union jobs.
