Bing Administration Proposes Sweeping Cuts

The Bing Administration is proposing sweeping budget cuts to help erase Detroit’s fiscal defici Administration officials estimate Detroit has an accumulated budget deficit of more than a quarter of a billion dollars. Under the recent consent agreement with the state Detroit must eliminate that deficit – and Deputy Mayor Kirk Lewis is proposing to begin by making a 10 percent cut in wages for police and firefighters. Lewis said, “You only have so many dollars to spend so you really have to prioritize what do you want to spend it on. And that’s the process we’re going through right now. And that’s what this consent agreement really has allowed us – to create that framework.” He adds that there are certain core services Detroit must focus on maintaining – including public safety, lighting and garbage pickup.
