Attorneys For Militia Allege Entrapment

March 16, 2012

A trial continues in Michigan for members of a militia accused of plotting to overthrow the government. Defense attorneys claim the FBI was in essence trying to entrap the militia members into criminal activity… Federal prosecutors have charged seven members of a group calling itself the Hutaree with sedition and planning to shoot police in order to incite a general uprising against the government. But during court testimony defense attorneys are reciting e-mails sent by an FBI agent who writes about nailing the group by – quote – “getting them to bite on additional explosives and weapons activity.” The defense argues that the militia members were in fact simply weekend warriors engaging in admittedly offensive but constitutionally protected free speech. The government counters the Hutaree were actively gathering weapons and preparing to launch an attack.
