Residents in Allen Park voted to increase funding for public safety but did not want to spend more to pay off a failed film studio. Mayor-elect William Matakas says he ran for office because he could create what he called a serious plan to solve the financial problems in Allen Park. That trumped a challenge from former Councilman David Babbage, who touted his past government experience. And Matakas will have more budget room to work with after voters approved an additional three-and-a-half mills to help cover police and fire service for the next five years. But that’s offset by continuing debt from a failed film studio deal. Voters turned down a millage that would have supported bonds to help pay off the studio.
