Selfie-pocalypse! LSSU Goes T' Work On Banished Words #misused #overused

December 31, 2013

"That's what we hear most for all the words and phrases that made the list, that people are just tired of hearing about it."

Tom Pink, Lake Superior State University spokesman, on the school's annual "banished words" list.

The Oxford Dictionary named “selfie” as its word of the year for 2013. It describes a picture you take of yourself with your cell phone, and share with your friends on social media. Some people would like to see the word banished from the English language. No sooner said than done. “Selfie” tops this year’s list of overused and generally lame words and phrases being exiled by the folks at Lake Superior State University--a Michigan tradition since 1975. Tom Pink is a spokesman for the school, which receives nominations from people across the country. WDET's Pat Batcheller asked him why people hate the word "selfie" so much.
