TIME: Pope Is Changing Catholic Conversation.

December 16, 2013

"By saying (abortion, gay marriage, etc.) are not the only issues at the center of church teaching, he is in fact changing climate of the last couple of decades."

Rev. John Staudenmaier, UDM historian on Pope Francis being named Time's Person of the Year.

Time Magazine has named Pope Francis as its Person of the Year. Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs says since being elected in March, the pontiff has changed the tone, perception, and focus of the Roman Catholic Church in an extraordinary way. He’s also won a lot of fans. A St. Leo University poll says 82 percent of America’s Catholics approve of Francis, while his rating among all Americans is 61 percent. Rev. John Staudenmaier is the Assistant to the President for Mission and Identity at the University of Detroit-Mercy. He tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller that it’s too early to know if Francis is drawing new people to the Church, or bringing back those who left. Click on the audio link above to hear the conversation.
