Detroit Broadcaster Gene Elzy Dies

Monday, December 2, 2013

Long-time Detroit broadcaster Gene Elzy has died.

He worked for more than 45 years as a broadcaster in Detroit, informing and entertaining listeners at radio stations including WCHB, WJR, and WDET before his retirement in 2006. He also served as a host for American Black Journal on Channel 56.

Elzy sat down to speak with WDET’s Jerome Vaughn back in 2001 to talk about his days as news director at WCHB. During their conversation, he recalled one event in particular – his experience driving down Livernois to cover the city’s riot in July 1967.

Visitation takes place Friday evening at Swanson's Funeral Home, 14751 McNichols in Detroit.
