Dozens of Detroit residents gathered at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center Wednesday evening to argue against the proposed demolition of the State Savings Bank. The owners of the downtown building submitted a request last week to tear down the historic structure…to make room for a parking garage. Because of the building’s significance, both sides had an opportunity to speak in front of the Detroit Historic District Commission. In the end…the commission voted to block the plans for demolition. WDET’s J. Carlisle Larsen was at the meeting and has this report.
